Năm 1897 pháo đài Alexander được chuyển thành một phòng thí nghiệm phục vụ nghiên cứu các dịch bệnh nguy hiểm như tả, uốn ván, sốt phát ban, nhiễm tụ cầu khuẩn... Tuy nhiên nơi này lại đặc biệt nổi tiếng vì những thí nghiệm với vi khuẩn Yersenia, nguyên nhân của bệnh dịch hạch. Chính vì vậy, pháo đài Alexander còn có tên khác là "pháo đài bệnh dịch". |
